Cai Mao

Another sketch. This one was for fun.
A character I'm expanding on significantly in my take on the Sanguo.

"You speak so fleetingly of loyalty. I don't even think you know the meaning of the word. You think it only applies to others. Thing is, I think you only care about disloyalty. You've never acknowledged when someone was loyal to you yet you're always so quick to punish someone who you judge to be disloyal. But what you don't understand is loyalty isn't like that. Loyalty isn't 'bought' or 'stolen' or 'inherited'. Loyalty is 'earned'. Only one man has ever earned my loyalty and I shall stand by him till the end"

Cai Mao. Known as the Magpie. A Captain in the Jing Navy under Lord Liu Biao.
A nephew of the celebrated scholar, Cai Yong, and brother to Lady Cai Xishi, Liu Biao's second wife, Cai Mao is an elegant young social-climber, straightforward and cunning. Though unscrupulous in his methods, his family and friends mean everything to him and it is for them he fights in battle against Jing's enemies.
Born to a merchant's family, Cai Mao and his sister are hated by Jing's noble families. Grand Admiral Huang Zu, in particular, wishes death upon the boy, often sending him into battle against their dreaded foes, Wu.
Liu Biao is suspicious of his brother-in-law and gives him as little power as possible and treating his sister and nephew with very little affection, something Cai Mao resents bitterly.
Meeting Cao Cao during the underground war against the Ten Attendants, the two become great friends and, after Cao Cao's rise to power and marriage to Cai Wenji, practically brothers.
Charismatic and charming, the peasant and soldier classes of Jing adore Cai Mao and many hope he will go on to lead Jing.
